Our adult program covers the range from absolute beginner to preparation for the Cambridge Proficiency Exam. Lessons are presented in a balanced and stimulating manner, building on and reinforcing what has been learned previously, while always emphasising oral communication.
Students learn functional English and practice with authentic materials and situations as much as is possible. Our system applies the most up-to-date pedagogical techniques for teaching and practicing English, adapting as required these proven methods to the necessities of each class in a manner that each student can maximise his/her learning. Each level consists of 100 hours of class.
Courses for adults include general courses and Cambridge Exam preparation courses (FCE, CAE, & CPE) and alternative courses for those not interested in taking examinations.
The table below shows the levels of our adult courses and how these levels correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF).
L-1: Beginner (Equivalent to CEF A1 level)
This course helps students to start building their vocabulary and teaches them some basic structures so that they can communicate in everyday situations. Students will learn how to give information about themselves, their family, their job; explain daily routines; and how to do things like book a hotel room, order food in a restaurant and give simple directions.
Grammar structures include present simple, past simple, and present continuous.
L-2: Elementary (Equivalent to CEF A2 level)
We work on advancing students' vocabulary and grammar, and on developing self-confidence, through lots of speaking and listening practice. When people speak to students now in English they will be able to understand more and more. Students can now talk about things that happened in the past and their future plans.
Grammar structures include the basic future tenses, present perfect, and past continuous.
L-3: Pre-Intermediate
This level solidifies students' basic grammar and focuses on improving vocabulary and pronunciation. Students will have more of a grammatical range and more of the words you need to express themselves confidently in English and to understand others when they speak.
Students will learn how to use the present perfect with confidence, use comparatives and superlatives, first and second conditionals, and how to use a whole range of modal verbs.
M-1: Intermediate (Equivalent to CEF B1 level)
At this level students continue to build up their vocabulary and learn more complex grammar structures. Students learn to express more abstract ideas and talk about past experiences with growing confidence.
New grammar structures include present perfect continuous, third conditional, reported speech, gerunds & infinitives, passive voice, and students get their first in-depth look at phrasal verbs.
M-2: Upper-Intermediate
At this level (often called pre-First Certificate), students work on the four basic skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening. Grammatical structures students need for the First Certificate next year are covered in-depth.
These structures and vocabulary are consolidated with activities and speaking practice in class. Listenings get longer and more complex but so do students abilities to comprehend them.
First Certificate (FCE) (Equivalent to CEF B2 level)
The First Certificate exam shapes much of the content of this course: listening, writing, reading, speaking and grammar each make up equal parts of the class.
Students will have to work hard at this level and are expected to do large blocks of homework and to write compositions regularly. The work pays off, as students begin to feel more confident about using and understanding English.
Practice tests are given well before each official exam period (December, March, and June) to decide if students are prepared to take the exam. Trained and experienced examiners help students with skills and strategies to prepare for all aspects of the exam and FCE candidates are given extensive extra practice, especially for the speaking part of the exam.
Pre-CAE
This course is designed for students who don't want to jump right in to another exam course after successful completion of the Cambridge First Certificate Exam (or have an equivalent level).
Students build on what they have learned up to this point and learn how to express themselves in more varied ways. Classes focus less on grammar and more on expanding students' vocabulary, writing, speaking and reading skills.
Advanced (CAE) (Equivalent to CEF C1 level)
The objective of this course is for students to reach the level required for Cambridge Advanced English. As this again is an examination class, students are expected to work especially hard both in and outside the classroom. Writing and speaking are the two main focuses of classes.
Practice tests are given well before each official exam period (December, March, and June) to decide if students are prepared to take the exam. Trained and experienced examiners help students with skills and strategies to prepare for all aspects of the exam and CAE candidates are given extensive extra practice, especially for the speaking part of the exam.
Proficiency (CPE) (Equivalent to CEF C2 level)
The Proficiency exam course is for students who have passed CAE (or have an equivalent level). The level of linguistic competence required to pass CPE is very high. Once again, as this again is an examination class, students are expected to work especially hard both in and outside the classroom.
Practice tests are given well before each official exam period (December and June) to decide if students are prepared to take the exam. Trained and experienced examiners help students with skills and strategies to prepare for all aspects of the exam and CPE candidates are given extensive extra practice, especially for the speaking part of the exam. |
